Lost by 54 runs to Tamil Nadu; Mulani’s all-round brilliance is in vain
Despite the all-round performance of skipper Shams Mulani (75 off 100 balls and 1 wicket), the defending champions Mumbai lost to Tamil Nadu in the opening match of the Vijay Hazare Trophy ODI cricket tournament.
Shah Rukh Khan’s (66 off 35 balls) batting and Manimaran Siddharth’s (3/43), Washington Sundar (3/60) spin duo’s impressive knock helped Tamil Nadu to a 54-run victory in the Group B match. Mumbai will meet Baroda on Thursday.
Batting first, Tamil Nadu put up 290 for 8 in 50 overs. With 179 for 5 in 37.3 overs, Shah Rukh, who came to bat, hit six fours and five sixes to take Tamil Nadu to 522 runs.
Chasing the target, the opening pair of successful Jaiswal (5) and Arman Jaffer (9) got Mumbai back in trouble as they returned cheaply. Siddhesh Lad (16) and Shivam Dubey (4) also failed to impress. Mulani along with Sairaj Patil (42) added 62 runs for the sixth wicket to help Mumbai win the toss. But after the pair’s dismissal, Mumbai’s innings ended at 236 runs.
Tamil Nadu: 290 for 8 in 50 overs (Shahrukh Khan 66, Baba Inderjit 45; Dhawal Kulkarni 3/45) Mumbai: 236 all out in 46.4 overs (Shams Mulani 75, Sairaj Patil 42; Washington Sundar 3/60)
Marks: Tamil Nadu 4, Mumbai 0
