December 7 is celebrated as Armed Forces Flag Day by the Soldiers Welfare Department of the State Government. Immediately after India’s independence, the government felt the need to properly manage the welfare of the soldiers. That is why the committee formed under the chairmanship of the then Defense Minister decided to celebrate 7th December every year as Flag Day. The idea behind this was to give a small flag as a gift to the citizens of the country in memory of the soldiers and in return they would accept donations from the citizens. This day is for all the soldiers in our country. The countrymen pay homage to the martyred soldiers on this day. Soldiers are the greatest asset of any country and they play a vital role in keeping the country safe and secure.

History of Indian Armed Forces Flag Day

A committee headed by the then Defense Minister of India was formed on 28th August 1949. The committee decided that Flag Day would be celebrated on December 7 every year. The main purpose of the Indian Armed Forces Flag Day was to distribute small flags among the citizens and raise funds for the Souniks in return. This day has been important for many years. The reason behind this is that it is the responsibility of all the people of India to take care of the families of the soldiers.

Importance of Indian Armed Forces Flag Day

It is the duty of the citizens of the country not only to praise the martyrs but also to take care of their families after them. Indian Armed Forces Flag Day is primarily for the welfare of soldiers and their families, ex-servicemen and their families. This day is celebrated to commemorate the martyrs and wounded soldiers in the war. This is important because it reminds us of our duty to take care of the wounded soldiers, heroic women and the families of the martyrs.

This fund is used by the government for the following purposes

Financial assistance for a total of 44 types of welfare fund schemes. The committee is chaired by a former soldier welfare minister.

From the special fund, hostels for military boys / girls and ex-servicemen’s rest houses are run at reasonable rates.

The Armed Forces is always equipped to defend the country as well as perform invaluable services in times of natural and man-made disasters. The funds are utilized for the implementation of various welfare schemes for the rehabilitation of soldiers who have been disabled in the war and retired from the Armed Forces, in order to alleviate the hardships in the lives of the families of the soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the defense of India. Most of the flag day fund is used to implement various welfare schemes for the rehabilitation of ex-servicemen.
